The guitar is the least important element. Best for funk is a deep sense of pocket. If you have great pocket, anything you play will sound good.
However, I do have a personal preference for the 25.5" Fender scale twang when playing funk, so that'd be a telecaster or a strat. But there have been great funk players using Gibsons too.

Gibson 335, Fender strat etc.
BTW, Prince used to play a maple bodied telecaster. Strat seems to be a popular choice.

im surprised you all are mentioning single coil'd guitars... whenever I think of funk I get that bassline in my head... "play that funky music white boy..." haha anyways, wouldnt something humbucking sound a lil better for something more bassy like funk?
really, you can play funk with anything...

Strat, go for it. But, most important thing is feeling... funk guitar isn't up front like rock or metal, so it isn't such a big deal.

definitely a Strat for funk. Funk sounds nicer when it's clear and glassy like a strat. A Les Paul type guitar would be a little too fat for this.

Fender Stratocaster guitars absolutely makes the choice. Strat is an ultimate choice, lots of styles can be played with it with a good effort. I love my strats funk sound, cannot get better

I agree with therob. The traditional funk sound is the in-between "quack" of a Strat in position 2 or 4. It's a thin enough sound to sound good with heavy 5-string comps and quick stabs, which are big parts of funk.

Definetly Fender over Gibson. I, personally, feel like Gibson is more geared towards the rock / metal genre.

strats or parker deluxe, they are great too, also because they have a piezo pickup.
Eitherway try to play over the single coils, they have that funky feel.

I like to use my strat for funk style. With a wah pedal, you can use the pickup controls to really dial in the tone your looking for.

I read on the internet that the best guitar was Samick, so it must be so.
