It might be easier for everyone to give you some thoughts if you explained what you needed out of the amp more.
For instance the style you play, how big are the venues you play, is this for practice or both practice and performances, combo or head and cab. You know... all the stuff that goes into picking the right amp for the player. There are a bunch of great amps out there in that price range, but you are probably better off getting something that sounds good with your particular style.

Well i dont play on the road anymore and i want a head and cab that can keep up with my deep raunchy lead play. I need something that can still crank out some great tones at low volume but also still have enough power to get super loud for some stage play if i ever get back into it. I am pretty partial to marshall but i would be open to try something else.

For an all-around great amp, that plays good in for every style, try out a marshall avt-50 or 100. I got mine for like $500. Don't just scoff at it because its not fully a tube amp. Unlike a straight tube amp, it plays great at all volumes, and you can dial a wider variety of tones. I've found with my tube amps, its tougher to get the tone im looking for because as you change the volume, you change the overall tone.

In my opinion try to get a tube amp ... If you get back into stage play you will most probably be through the PA. I would recommend the Peavey Classic 30 for distortion in an ACDC rock style... It is cheap for a valve and has a real bite that transtube tech doesn't offer

Check out the reviews over at Harmony-Central and you can read a ton of reviews and what people are saying about amps they've owned.
Definately something tube, and I'd probably go with a combo 2x12 as lugging around a 4x12 gets old real quick and if you need the extra juice they'll just mic it anyway.

I would recommend a Fender Tube Amp. Maybe the Hot Rod Deluxe, or the Blues Deluxe... They are very cool amps.. doesn't lose value during the years and are very solid!! Peavey Classic Series is another good choice.. maybe distorsion on peavey is better.. but nothing is clear like a Fender amp... Fender Twin Reiusse 65 is The Clean amp for definition!

I would recommend 2 amps.
For blues, jazz, classic rock. Laney VC15
For metal and distortion sounds Peavey.
P.S. I don't like Fender amps. You get more with Laney and Peavey for much better price.
